ANCIENT POTTERY DEMONSTRATIONS
by Experimental Archaeologist/Master Potter Graham Taylor
With over thirtyfive years potting experience, the demonstrations I can offer are wide ranging, encompassing:  Neolithic pottery, Bronze-Age pottery, Iron-Age pottery, Roman pottery , Anglo-Saxon pottery, Medieval pottery.  If required workshops can be presented in appropriate period costume for a full living history effect.

The pottery techniques I can demonstrate include:
  • Clay prospecting & preparation
  • Tool and ceramic equipment making
  • Kiln building and firing
  • Prehistoric hand and coil making
  • Prehistoric open firing
  • Roman wheel thrown pottery
  • Roman Samian & Barbotine pottery
  • Roman mould made ceramics
  • Early Anglo-Saxon handmade pottery
  • Late Saxon & Medieval wheel throwing
  • and much more
Demonstrations can be tailored to any age group and can be presented as an illustrated lecture, for those with a more academic level of interest or those working towards a formal qualification.  Sessions can consist of a mixture of demonstration and hands-on workshop.  These can be presented to a single group booked in for the full session or can be presented to passing crowds or drop in groups as part of a larger event.  Ancient pottery workshops are ideal for living history and heritage events but have been preesnted very successfully at country fairs and charity events.

I have delivered demonstrations and workshops covering other time periods and cultures including; Ancient Egyptian, Ancient Greek, African, Oriental, Post Mediaeval British pottery and modern studio pottery.
